The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM)

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is an early intervention program for children with or at risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It is an evidence-based, play-based intervention that aims to promote the development of social communication, language, and cognitive skills in young children.

ESDM was developed by Sally Rogers and Geraldine Dawson in the 1990s, and is based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and developmental theory. It is designed for children between the ages of 12 and 48 months, and typically involves 20 hours per week of one-on-one therapy with a trained therapist.

The ESDM intervention focuses on naturalistic teaching techniques, which means that learning opportunities are embedded into everyday activities and play routines. The therapist uses play and activities that are interesting to the child to teach social communication skills, language skills, and cognitive skills. The therapist also uses a variety of ABA techniques, such as reinforcement and prompting, to support the child's learning.

The ESDM curriculum is organized into 12 domains, including: social communication, joint attention, play, imitation, receptive language, expressive language, cognitive skills, and self-help skills. The curriculum is individualized for each child based on their strengths and needs and is designed to build on the child's existing skills and interests.

The ESDM intervention involves active participation and collaboration between the therapist, the child, and the child's family. The therapist provides ongoing feedback and support to the family to promote generalization of skills across settings and activities.
